Woman ends life over dowry harassment

Mysuru: A 22-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide by hanging self after she was allegedly harassed frequently by her husband and his family members for dowry. The incident took place on Sept. 2 morning at Belavadi.

The deceased woman is J. Shilpa, daughter of Lakshmamma of Amruteshwara Nagar in city. A case has been registered against Shilpa’s husband and her mother-in-law at Vijayanagar Police Station.

Lakshmamma, a labourer, has three children and Shilpa was the second. Shilpa was given in marriage to 32-year-old Mahesh of Hosadoddi Village in Ramanagar district on Apr. 19, 2021.

It is learnt that, Mahesh’s family members had not asked for dowry at the time of marriage but later began to harass Shilpa to bring  dowry from her parents’ house. At the time of marriage, Mahesh was given 23 grams gold and when Shilpa went back to her husband’s house post delivery, her husband was again given 20 grams gold ornaments, but still her husband and his family members were still harassing her to get dowry.

When Shilpa disclosed this to her family members, she was brought to her mother’s house on Aug. 19 and Shilpa was afraid to go back to her husband’s house despite being advised many times. On Sunday at about 3 am, Lakshmamma heard Shilpa’s baby crying and went to check on her only to find Shilpa hanging from the ceiling fan.

Vijayanagar Police have registered a case against Shilpa’s husband Mahesh and his mother Rathnamma.
