Ponnampet: A woman and her son were reportedly drowned in the river at T. Shettigeri village in the taluk on Saturday morning.
The deceased are Revathi (32), wife of Chattangada Prakash and their son Karyappa (12).
On Saturday morning, Revathi and Karyappa had taken their cow for grazing on the banks of Lakshmanatheertha River during which the cow, which was tied with a rope had untied itself and ran near the river.
Karyappa, who ran behind the cow in an attempt to catch it, slipped and fell into the river and Revathi, who was on the banks, saw her son drowning and jumped into the river to rescue him but both of them reportedly got drowned.
As the woman and her son did not go home till late afternoon, the family members, who went in search of them found the slippers of Revathi and Karyappa on the river banks and informed the jurisdictional Srimangala Police.
The Police, who rushed to the spot, launched a search operation to trace the bodies till late Saturday evening.
The search operation was suspended due to darkness and was resumed on Sunday morning and the body of Revathi was traced in the afternoon. The body was shifted to a hospital for post-mortem.
Though the search operation continued till late Sunday evening, the body of Karyappa could not be traced and the search was suspended following darkness.
The Police, who resumed the search on Monday, finally traced the body of Karyappa and was shifted to a hospital, where post-mortem was conducted. Srimangala Police, who have registered a case, are investigating.
