Observing that women play a crucial role in the all-round development of a family, Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Marithibbegowda regretted that women are not getting their due in the political and economic fronts. He was speaking at the International Women’s Day celebrations organised at the JD(S) office on Seshadri Iyer Road here yesterday.
Pointing out that a woman is behind a man’s success, Marithibbegowda said that women have achieved big in almost every field in recent times.
Bemoaning that laws dealing with atrocities against women were not effectively implemented, he said that there were many instances in the past when women fought for their just rights and privileges.
Recalling that JD(S) Supremo H.D. Deve Gowda, when he was the Prime Minister 20 years ago, had pushed for providing 30 percent reservation for women in State Assemblies and Parliament, Marithibbegowda said that the former PM must be credited for 50 percent reservation for women in local bodies.
He further said that H.D. Kumaraswamy had announced many schemes for women when he was the Chief Minister.
Dr. Manikarnika (healthcare), Sharadamma (education) Chikkathayamma (folklore), Mangalamma (Anganawadi helper) and ‘Kittur Rani Chennamma’ awardee Manjula Ramesh were felicitated on the occasion.
