Worried of losing Rs. 1.46 lakh to fraudsters, man dies of shock

Mysore/Mysuru: Unable to bear the loss of his hard earned money to online fraudsters, an elderly man, who was depressed after the fraudsters siphoned off Rs. 1.46 lakh from his Bank account, has died of shock at his house in Hanumanthanagar in the wee hours of yesterday.

The deceased is Haroon Rashid (79), who was running a fair price shop earlier and had saved some money in his Bank account. On Aug. 28 at about 1.15 pm, a stranger, who called him over the phone, to fulfil formalities to update the Know Your Customer (KYC) and also obtained the One Time Password (OTP) which was sent to Rashid’s mobile phone.

Within 15 minutes of Rashid sharing the OTP, he received a message that Rs. 1,46,000 has been deducted from his Bank account. Surprised and also shocked, Rashid informed about the message to his relative Waseem at about 3 pm, who rushed to Canara Bank branch, opposite  KSRTC Depot in Bannimantap and informed the staff about the incident. He later went to  CEN Police Station with relevant documents and lodged a complaint. CEN Inspector Prasanna, who has registered a case, is investigating through technical method.

Meanwhile, Rashid’s relative Waseem, speaking to SOM said that, “After Rashid became depressed, relatives and friends met him and put a few words of courage. But Rashid, who slept on Wednesday night, did not wake up next day morning.”

A complaint in this regard has also been lodged at N.R. Police Station.
