Mysore/Mysuru: Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture Department M.D. Sudarshan has said “I had urged the then Government to convert writer Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar’s house into a memorial, which didn’t materialise. The Government should at least take a step now in this regard.”
He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Goruru’ theatre show based on Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar’s ‘Namma Oorina Rasikaru,’ organised by Niranthara Foundation at Kiru Rangamandira in Kalamandira premises in city last evening.
Sudarshan said that the memorial may become a reality, if the proposal is pursued further.
Prasad Kundur of Niranthara Foundation said, “It is unique that Goruru Ramaswamy Iyengar’s literary work has been adapted to the stage in the form of a play. The writer was a Gandhian and his meaningful writings have left a lasting impression.”
Deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhiji, the writer was firm on bringing transformation by highlighting the ills of the society in his literary works. It is indeed a pleasant experience to watch the play based on his literary work, he added.
Senior journalist Jagadish Koppa lauded Niranthara Foundation for adapting literary work of Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar to theatre.
The writer fought against caste ridden society. His literary work depicting the influence of caste in the society was also adapted into celluloid. Film Bhootayyana Maga Ayyu, with late actors Vishnuvardhan and Lokesh in the main roles and directed by renowned director S. Siddalingaiah received a very good response from all the quarters, he said.
The inaugural session was followed by staging of the play Goruru, directed by Manjunath L. Badigera. The play was staged to a houseful audience, with theatre lovers even occupying the floor due to non-availability of seats.
