Mysuru: A ten-day Folk Art camp for rural students organised jointly by V-Care, Department of Women and Child Welfare and Bala Vikasa Academy commenced yesterday at Hootagalli Government High School premises here.
Wearing attractive costumes, the students got a feel of Kamsale and Veeragase dances and also played on the ‘Nagari’ without skipping a rhythm.
The girl students gave a demonstration of karate which could be used as an effective tool for self-defence. The students dancing to Veeragase brandishing knives was a treat to watch. The students also presented yoga in dance form.
Speaking on the occasion, K. Padma, Assistant Director, Department of Women and Child Welfare, commended the organisers in organising a summer camp with focus on folk art which should be nurtured and preserved for posterity.
Addressing the gathering, Probationary IAS officer Lakshmi advised parents to educate girl children and also encourage them in extra-curricular activities to shun inhibitions and come up in career.
Journalist Rajashekar Koti, National School of Drama, Bengaluru Director C. Basavalingaiah and others were present.
