Mysuru: All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH), Mysuru, established in 1965, for human resource development, research, clinical services and public education in the field of communication disorders, will be celebrating its 54th anniversary on Aug.9.
On the invitation of Government of India, Dr. Martin F. Palmer, Director, Institute of Logopedics, Wichita, Kansas, USA, visited India in 1963 and recommended for setting up an Institute of Logopedics in India at Mysore. On Aug.9, 1965, All India Institute of Logopedics started functioning in Rama Mandira (a rented building) with Dr. B.M. Rao as the first Director.
On July 25, 1966, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India, laid the foundation stone of the Institute building and on Oct.10, 1966, the Institute was registered as an autonomous Institute under the Society Registration Act with the name “All India Institute of Speech and Hearing.”
Over the years, the Institute has blossomed into one of the premier establishments across South Asia in the field of communication disorders.
The 54th Annual Day celebrations will be held tomorrow at 10.30 am at AIISH Seminar Hall, Knowledge Park, Naimisham Campus, Manasagangothri. Dr. Shalini Rajneesh, Principal Secretary, Department of Planning, Programming, Monitoring and Statistics, Bengaluru, Prof. G. Hemantha Kumar, Vice- Chancellor, University of Mysore and Rishab Shetty, Film Director and Actor, will be the chief guests. Dr. M. Pushpavathi, Director, AIISH, will preside.
Dr. Mysore Manjunath, internationally renowned violinist and Prashanth, Cine Actor, will be the guests for cultural programme at 6.30 pm on the same day at AIISH Gymkhana Auditorium, Panchavati Campus.
On the occasion, inaugurations of NBS Centres and releases of Annual Report and Dissertation-based articles will be done. Retired employees, employees who completed 25 years of service, Ph.D awardees, meritorious students will be felicitated and AIISHian of the Year Award will be presented during the valedictory.
