The author emphasises the importance of learning to live, both on the part of parents and youngsters. Several questions are taken up, like how to keep youngsters moving forward, though angry outbursts are heard before a reconciliation is reached, as the elders douse the fire.
The title ‘Composting With Care’ is likely to baffle a few. Author Rani Rao clears the tangle by saying ‘Composting’ refers to agriculture, whereas ‘Care’ signifies awareness of the burning problem, chalking out a nice future for the groping youngsters.
Grasping the task, young minds can be rid of indiscipline by way of counselling, both by teachers and elders and restoring declining confidence. No admonition of the suffering is brought out throughout the book; instead, calm, calculated words of wisdom triumph.
The strong voice of the elders or the meek submission by the erroneous do not find expression.
A simple, straight way of communication is admirable. The hypothetical means of ‘give and take’ resolves any intricate situation that afflicts young ones.
The writer looks at certain addictions: Consumption of alcohol, drugs and painkillers resorted to by wavering minds can be set aside by proper advice with a dose of psychic soothing.
The pages in ‘Composting…’ bring out positive results both in young and old by way of thinking, pausing and taking decision later on.
The writer illustrates the actions taken by a Nigerian family trying to rectify the mistakes of the worried ones.
The whole community, the entire village discuss the likely pitfalls in a public meeting and then arrives at a plausible solution.
Empathy would go a long way in minimising errors. It is interesting to note that it needs ‘five positive reactions to each negative interaction.’
In conclusion, one is sure that at the cortex development level, it calls for a cordial atmosphere between the teacher and the taught to rule out ill- conceived notions of healthy growth in a few dogged young minds.
One should bear in mind that to create a smiling public interest, for the greater good of community well-being.
