Mysuru: The English play “Speak Your Mind” was staged under the aegis of Kalasuruchi in city recently as part of the quarterly production project by METF (Mysore English Theatre Forum), under the direction of A.K. Monnappa.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, with a sharp script and perfectly cast roles. The play explored the complexity of relationships in American society, revolving around a young couple and the girl’s mother, a cancer survivor, who is contemplating marriage after receiving a proposal.
The daughter tries to dissuade her mother, using an imagined version of her late father to justify her resistance. This brought out daughter’s mixed emotions and subtle dynamics within the family.
Adding an intriguing layer to the story was the son-in-law, who was both surprised and pleased at the prospect of a possible inheritance if the mother remarried. This led to a crisp exchange between the young couple, as the wife fiercely questioned his motives, bringing humour and tension into the narrative. Dialogues were sharp, blending satire and light mockery, while the play carried hidden emotions beneath its humour and anguish. The natural acting and excellent chemistry between the cast members added to the impact. Costumes and the stage were highlights of the play. Technical aspects, including lighting and sound, were well-executed.
It was a highly enjoyable and thought-provoking venture, leaving the audience reflecting on the intricacies of relationships and human motives. Congratulations to Monnappa, Anuradha Nandakumar, the new talented find for METF Krishna and Keerti for a wonderful presentation. Kudos to METF, Kalasuruchi and the entire team. — Dr. Madhuri Kulkarni
