A serious work should have profound thoughts, says author Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa

Saraswathi Samman interacts on his work ‘Anchu’

Mysore/Mysuru: Acclaimed writer and Saraswathi Samman awardee Dr. S.L. Bhyrappa said that a work which does not have a deep insight into values and espouse profound thoughts is not serious literature.

He was speaking at an interaction webinar on his work ‘Anchu’ (‘Brink’) organised by S.L. Bhyrappa Sahitya Pratisthana here yesterday.

Maintaining that his work ‘Anchu’ involves a special style of writing with factual consideration, Dr. Bhyrappa said that the work has been greeted by many people, while several others have said that they did not understand it. It is happy to note that this webinar has been organised in order to make everyone understand his work through an interaction.

Responding to a query by veteran Littérateur Dr. Pradhan Gurudatt, he said that ‘Anchu’ has two major characters and all the rest are supportive characters. He noted that while one character is that of an educated lady who is deceived in life, the other is an enthusiastic, professionally educated man. Pointing out that the work has the love story between these two characters and how the lady shows all the anger and frustration on the man who loves her honestly, he said that the novel focuses on the inner details of the psychological and temperamental variation of the characters without perceivable external events and actions.

Dr. Bhyrappa cited the story of a beggar woman from Nanjangud and the backdrop of Chamundi Hill, to explain the work.

Stressing on the need for making a psychological analysis of every work, he said that Psychology and Philosophy are inter related and should be better understood before writing a novel.

Writer R. Ranganath Prasad, who has translated ‘Anchu’ into English (‘Brink’), noted Physicist Dr. Prasad Bapat and author Arjun Bharadwaj too spoke about the book.

S.L. Bhyrappa Pratisthana Trustee S.B. Udayashankar, Hon. Secretary Dr. G.S. Shekhar, former Akashvani Director Vijaya Haran and former Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara Chairman Prof. Pradhan Gurudatt were present during the occasion.
