Aadhaar Seva Kendra staff have always shown utmost patience

September 5, 2023

Sir,

With reference to the letter regarding ‘Lacuna in biometrics update at Aadhaar Seva Kendra’ (ASK) in SOM  dated Sept.1, I would like to offer the following clarifications:

1. It is clearly shown in the acknowledgement form as to how many fingers, iris and face have been updated. For fingers, there is a clear picture showing which fingers have been successfully captured by indication of tick marks.

If any fingers could not be captured it is indicated by cross (x) marks. In some cases the fingerprints of certain customers cannot be captured at all as their fingerprints are worn-out due to aging or chemical action.

However, a biometric update can be successful in Aadhaar even though any fingers may not be successfully captured due to aging or other physical reasons, since iris scan and photo are also captured.

2. Most ration shops, banks or mobile shops use single finger authentication devices which are less sensitive and reliable than the devices used in the ASKs. So there are many cases where they are not able to authenticate the customer’s fingerprints even though the biometrics have been successfully updated in Aadhaar. In such cases they are required to do the authentication through OTPs or iris scan. This issue needs to be resolved by the ration shop, bank, etc.

3. Notwithstanding the above, the ASK staff have always shown utmost patience and cooperation while updating the biometrics of aged or handicapped persons, or young children.
