Mysuru: Actress-cum-Kannada and Culture Minister Jayamala, inaugurated the rangoli competition by drawing rangoli at Mysore Palace premises here this morning.
The competition was organised by the Mahila Dasara Sub- Committee as part of Dasara festivities.
Speaking after inaugurating the competition, the Minister appreciated the women for keeping this art form and ancient tradition alive which brings positive energy among onlookers.
She said that drawing rangoli in front of houses is an auspicious sign and added that it is a custom to draw rangoli in front of houses during festivals, weddings, and other such occasions.
Designs are passed on from one generation to the next generation by certain changes and added that the purpose of rangoli is decoration. Rangoli adds beauty to the house besides bring good luck, she said and added that rangoli is always drawn during sunrise by the womenfolk after morning prayers.
As many as 101 women from Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu, Hassan, Davangere and others districts, who had registered their names for the competition stole the show with their colourful rangoli designs.
The participants drew rangolis of flowers, animals and birds besides reflecting the culture of the land. The rangoli contest was held in two categories – below 18 years and above 18 years.
Women and Child Welfare Department Deputy Director K. Radha and others were present.
