AI fines and Highway toll gate congestion

Urgent need for traffic reform

Sir,

I am writing to express my concerns about the current traffic enforcement practices by the Mysuru City Police, which are causing unnecessary congestion and frustration for road users, particularly at the toll gates on the Mysuru-Bengaluru National Highway.

On Feb. 9, 2025 (Sunday), while returning from Mysuru to Bengaluru, I encountered a troubling situation where a  Traffic Police Officer stopped multiple vehicles, including mine, to check for pending dues one by one.

Despite following proper road etiquette, such as using indicators while changing lanes near the surveillance cameras, I was flagged for an alleged lane violation based on unclear AI-generated evidence.

The image provided showed only a partial view of my car, which was clearly within the designated lane.

Even the officers present could not justify the violation after reviewing the image. They also preferred payment in cash, which I declined.

The situation was further aggravated by the traffic congestion caused by this flagging exercise at the Highway toll gates. Instead of ensuring the smooth flow of vehicles, these check-points led to long queues, causing frustration among travellers. It felt like a double toll collection, and the overall experience left a negative impression.

Such practices not only disrupt travel but also harm the region’s reputation as a tourist-friendly destination. Traffic enforcement should focus on habitual offenders, dangerous and reckless drivers without penalising disciplined drivers or creating unnecessary bottlenecks.

AI systems used for enforcement must undergo rigorous testing to ensure accuracy. Additionally, strategies should prioritise road safety and efficiency, rather than aggressive fine collection.

I urge the authorities to address these concerns urgently to ensure smoother traffic management and a more welcoming travel experience for all.
