Akkarai Sisters to present violin duet at Ganabharathi

Ganabharathi has organised a violin duet by Akkarai Sisters on Mar.8 at 6 pm at its premises in Kuvempunagar. They will be accompanied by Vidwan K.U. Jayachandra Rao on mridanga and Vid. Vazhapalli R. Krishnakumar on ghata. This event is organised in memory of Dr. R. Sundarachar and Saraswathi Rao.

Akkarai S. Subhalakshmi and S. Sornalatha, India’s most distinguished musicians, hail from a family with a rich musical background. They have learnt under illustrious gurus and are sought after worldwide. They began learning from their father Akkarai S. Swamynathan, a veteran violinist and founder of Swara Raga Sudha School of Music. Under his rigorous training, they grew to become wonderful violinists. They stunned the world with a skill and maturity that belied their years. They have also learnt under other renowned gurus such as V. Janakiraman, O.V. Subramanian, Padma Natesan of New Delhi, Padma Bhushan awardee P.S. Narayanaswamy and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Chitravina N. Ravikiran.

They have performed at numerous prestigious venues around the world, including the Indo-Russian Cultural Exchange Programme, the Théâtre de la Ville Festival (Paris), the farewell concert for Zubin Mehta (Munich), the Queen Elizabeth Hall and BBC Radio (London), the Mahatma Gandhi Institute Sangeet Utsav (Mauritius), UmeåJazzfestival (Sweden), and a special duet concert for the Emperor and Empress of Japan and for the Chief Minister and Governor of Tamil Nadu in 2013.

They also have had the privilege of being accompanied by stalwart accompanists, including the tavil legend Aridwaramangalam A.K. Pazhanivel, in their concerts. They have accompanied all most all the leading artistes.

They have been honoured with a host of awards and accolades; Subhalakshmi received the Rajiv Gandhi Yuva Puraskar from the President of India when she was just thirteen, and has since earned hundreds of awards.

Vidwan K. U. Jayachandra Rao belongs to the illustrious school of Palakkad Mani Iyer. He is the disciple of Mani Iyer’s son Palakkad T. R. Rajamani. He has accompanied all the stalwarts and is one of the most sought after mridangists.

Vazapalli R. Krishnakumar is the disciple of ghatam maestro Vidwan V. Suresh. He is known for his excellent following and solo playing.
