Mysuru: Sports can bring quality changes in life, said University of Mysore Vice-Chancellor Prof. N. K. Lokanath.
He was speaking after inaugurating the three-day All India Inter-Collegiate Men’s Basketball Tournament organised by Challengers Academy Basketball Club, at National Sports Club Ground at Freedom Fighters Memorial Park, Subbarayana Kere, in the city on Dec.20.
Prof. Lokanath said, sports plays a key role in bringing quality changes in one’s life. Apart from physical fitness, it also helps in developing creativity and improving thinking ability. Be it any sports irrespective of athletics and cricket, they provide opportunities in the future. So, the children should make it a hobby to regularly participate in any of the sports.
“Basketball is regarded as a intelligent game and I was regularly watching the people practicing the game, during my stay in Japan and USA. However, I was not aware of the game much then, which has become popular now, with several clubs encouraging the game. The children and youngsters can achieve in sports, if they are given better training. Such tournaments should be organised in Mysuru, with the local sporting talents getting due opportunity,” said Prof. Lokanath.
Chairman of Cauvery Group of Institutions Dr. G.R. Chandrashekar said, a firm mind is built in a firm body, which can be achieved only through sports. By participating in sports, quality thinking will become a habit.
He lauded the efforts of the organisers in gathering 18 teams to play the tournament.
Young basketball players who have made a name in the arena — Shravani, Suman and Ronak — were felicitated.
Secretary of Hari Vidyalaya H.R. Bhagwan, Director of Daksha College of Management P. Harish, pro-Kannada activist Ravishankar, President of Mysore District Basketball Association M.V. Srinivas, Challengers Academy’s Dr. Kantharaju and Shankare Gowda and Challengers Cup Organising Committee’s Brijesh Patel and other office-bearers were present on the occasion.
