Alleged dowry harassment: Gram Panchayat Secretary ends life

Mysore/Mysuru: Unable to bear frequent harassment for dowry, a newly wed woman, who was serving as the Secretary (Grade-1) at Bettadapura Gram Panchayat and residing at her husband’s house in Hebbal here, committed suicide by hanging self on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Vanitha (31), who was married to one Shivashankar, an event management professional, 11 months ago. They were residing opposite to CITB Kalyana Mantap in Hebbal here.

A native of Channapatna, Vanitha’s was a love marriage with Shivashankar. In spite of this, it is alleged that Shivashankar used to harass her frequently for dowry.

Unable to bear the harassment and torture by her husband, Vanitha hanged herself at her husband’s house on Tuesday night. Hebbal Police Station Inspector Prasad and staff, who rushed to the spot, conducted mahazar and shifted the body to MMC&RI mortuary, where post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to her family members.

Meanwhile, Vanitha’s mother Puttathayamma, alleging that her daughter had committed suicide due to dowry harassment, had lodged a complaint with the Police.  Hebbal Police, who registered a case, have arrested Shivashankar and are investigating.
