‘Amma’ award for city writer

Mysore/Mysuru: Writer Suchitra Hegde of Mysuru was conferred the prestigious 23rd State-level ‘Amma’ award given by Matoshri Mahadevamma Nagappa Munnur Pratishtana of Sedam at a programme held at Shambhavi Rangamantapa in Sri Panchalingeshwara temple at Sedam town in Kalaburagi district recently. She received the award for her travelogue titled ‘Jagava Suttuva Maaye.’

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, Medical Education Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil said that there can be no match for the love and affection shown by a mother to her child. The name ‘Amma’, meaning mother and the transparency that is maintained in the selection for the award, has enhanced the prestige of the award, he said adding that the award has a special significance in the Kannada literary world.

Speaking as chief guest, cultural thinker Siddaramaiah said that the minds of every one can be won through non-violence. Noting that awards should come searching for writers, he said that this will enhance the prestige of the award and ‘Amma’ award is a perfect example for this.

Scripture expert Dr. Devarakondareddy of Bengaluru stressed on the need for establishment of cultural centres in Kalyana Karnataka region.

Central University of Karnataka’s Kannada faculty Dr. Vikram Visaje emphasised on the need for publication of more literature that provides deep insight on societal issues in keeping with contemporary times.

About the awardee

Amma’ awardee Suchitra Hegde was born and brought up in Kumta taluk of Uttara Kannada district. After completing her degree in English Literature at Kumta’s Baliga College, she passed out B.Ed securing a rank. She got her PG degree in English Literature from Karnatak University, Dharwad. A passionate writer during her college days, her first collection of poems titled ‘Eee Chitte Kaadida Haage’ was published by Madilu Prakashana, Mysuru, in 2021.

Suchitra, who has toured more than 30 countries, has shared her experiences in the travelogue ‘Jagava Suttuva Maaye,’ published by Kavita Prakashana in June 2022. The book earned widespread praise for its exhaustive narration of the author’s travel experiences. Apart from writing, she has organised workshops on creative writing, writing travelogues, poems and the like in several Colleges at Mysuru and Bengaluru.

Suchitra had served in various educational institutions as Head Mistress, Principal, Head of the English Department etc., before settling down in Mysuru. A resident of Gokulam Second Stage, Suchitra is the wife of Anant Hegde, Senior General Manager in BNPM, Mysuru.
