Young Tarini Nagarkar gave a vocal concert on the 15th of this month with Pt. Bhima Shankar Bidanur on tabla and Pt. Veerabhadriah Hiremath on harmonium.
Tarini is a young artiste of sixteen years. What is more appreciative is the way she has taken classical music seriously though living in a foreign land. Her training under stalwarts like Pt. Nagaraj Hawaldar and Pt. Vinayak Toravi, added to her enthusiasm in learning, has given her singing an irresistible combination of tenderness and melody.
Tarini has a very rich, sweet-sounding voice, which she has trained to sound sweet even in the upper octave. Her Bihag was marked by a slow tempo that was admirable. ‘Kaise sukh sove’ in vilambit Ektal followed by Madhya lay addha ‘sab sahiya’ was devoid of gimmicks. Dhrut in teen tal ‘Langara Dheet’ maintained its dignity in speed. Adhana Kanada strictly adhered to tradition but could have been expanded with more depth. Accurate pitching throughout the concert deserves a special mention.
The latter half of the concert had a delightful set of chutukas. ‘Tappu nodade bandeya ennaya tande’ by Prasanna Venkata Dasaru, ‘Ide samaya Hariye doreye’ by Vijaya Dasaru, ‘Lokoddharini Amba Bhavani’ by Rekha in Sindhu Bhairavi and a Tulasidas bhajan ‘Raghuvara tumako’ were sung with surprising clarity.
Veerabhadriah Hiremath and Bhima Shankar provided encouraging and soothing support throughout the concert.
