Kannada Book Authority awardee Veerabhadre Gowda feted
Mysuru: Dhwani Kotta Dhani award was presented to five achievers from different fields by Anveshana Seva Trust, on account of 111th birth anniversary celebrations of former Chief Minister late D. Devaraj Urs, at Institution of Engineers (IEI) Mysuru Centre, in the city on Wednesday.
The award was presented to retired Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, Shivamogga, Prof. P. Venkataramaiah, Founder of Kannada Bhavan, Kasargod in Kerala, Vamanrao Bekal, President of Karnataka Lekhakiyara Sangha, Mysuru, Usha Narasimhan, Senior Reporter of Star of Mysore & Mysuru Mithra Bapu Lingaraj Urs and Actor – Director from Uttara Kannada A.N. Ramesh Kaiga.
Limericks writer Veerabhadre Gowda, who was recently conferred Kannada Book Authority Award, was also felicitated.
Dr. B.T. Kavitha, Superintendent of Police (SP), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), inaugurated the programme and paid her floral tributes to the portrait of Devaraj Urs.
In her address, Kavitha said “Devaraj Urs strove for the welfare of poor and the oppressed classes and contributed immensely, which is remembered till date. We have to move forward by realising the principles envisaged by Urs.”
Speaking on the contributions of Devaraj Urs, retired IAS Officer Dr. C. Somashekar said “The situations that elevated Urs to CM’s Office was indeed a miracle. Urs, as a Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President was in the coterie of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was credited for the party winning 165 seats in the Assembly elections in the State, following which Urs was made the CM in 1972. He served as the CM for two terms and was the first to remain in the office for a long-term.”
“I can proudly say that, no such social revolution was witnessed ever in the history of India, that came to witness during the era of Devaraj Urs. Had he willed, he could have lived a prosperous life, but he chose a different path, strive for the good of the society,” said Somashekar, singing paeans of the late leader.
Prof. Bhramara Bahadur of Bengaluru Bahadur Samskruthika Pratishtan also spoke about Urs.
Vastu expert and Shirdi Sai preacher Dr. D. Satish Chavan presided. Rajyotsava and Karnataka Media Academy awardee Dr. M.G.R. Urs, Founder-President of Anveshana Seva Trust Arya Amarnath Raje Urs, Vice-President HMT Lingaraje Urs, Mysore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President K.B. Lingaraju and others were present.
