Apathy of motorists to road safety rules

Sir,

Booking of 16.60 lakh traffic violation cases during the last one year alone in Mysuru city indicates the extent the vehicle users are negligent about the road safety rules (Star of Mysore dated Jan.1).

A hefty fine of Rs. 8.50 crore during last year, which is Rs. 1.2 crore more than its previous year (2016) clearly indicates that people are ready to pay the paltry fines rather than following road safety traffic rules for their own safety and safety of other road-users.

Although the number of fatal road accidents has seen a decreasing trend, the number of non-fatal road accidents has increased marginally during the last year.

Increasing the amount of fines heavily and the introduction of demerit point system, which leads to cancellation of licence beyond certain points, only can bring some discipline in vehicle-users and reduce traffic violations in the country in general and city in particular.
