‘Arguments in Law Courts more effective in Kannada’

December 3, 2019

Mysuru:  “If lawyers present their arguments in Kannada instead of English, the intricate facts of the case could be effectively communicated to the Court,” opined Principal District and Sessions Judge S.K. Vontigodi.

He was speaking after inaugurating Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations organised by Mysore Bar Association at the District Law Courts Complex premises here on Saturday.

Vontigodi observed that a few lawyers present a case before the Court initially in English and then switch over to Kannada and added that switching the language happens during argument presentation also which sounds improper. He opined that judgements too should be written in Kannada which would be more effective and convincing for the complainants.

Continuing, Vontigodi advised parents to speak in Kannada with their children. He observed that the love for the regional language in Karnataka is not upto the level as in Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra. He said that people speak on the richness of Kannada only on Rajyotsava Day which fades later on. He sought the trend to be changed.

Advocates  T.P. Kumar and Palahalli Nagendra, who have been using Kannada exclusively in their profession, were felicitated on the occasion.

Kannada Book Authority Chairman Dr. M.N. Nandish Hanche, Karnataka State Bar Council Member B.R. Chandramouli, Mysore Bar Association President S. Anand Kumar, Vice-President S.B. Shivannegowda, Secretary B. Shivanna and others were present.
