Mysore/Mysuru: Condemning the arrest of two nuns illegally at Durg in Chhattisgarh, Catholic community from Mysuru, Mandya and Chamarajanagar took out a silent protest march in city yesterday morning.

Over 1,000 community members, assembled near Infant Jesus Cathedral on Hunsur Road and took out the silent protest march by tying black cloth around their mouth. The silent march was launched by Vicar General of Mandya Rev. Msgr. Thomas Thennatil.

The protest march went up to Hinkal Ring Road Junction and returned to the Cathedral. Signatures were collected on a 10-metre banner, which will be sent to the Chhattisgarh Government.

Msgr. Thennatil emphasised that though the nuns have been released on bail, they should be exempted fully from the case and the minority should be protected as per the provisions of the Constitution of India.

Fr. Sojan Aikarakunnel MST and Fr. Augustin Paiampally CMI also spoke on the occasion.

Earlier, Suhas Wilson Kakkassery welcomed the gathering. Sanju Thomas, Joy Chitilapally, Sunil Jose, Anil Jose and others took part in the protest.

Catholic Association Mysuru condemns arrest

Meanwhile, the Catholic Association Mysuru has also condemned the arrest of two nuns.

In a press release, the Association stated that Sister Preetha Mary and Sister Vandana Francis, Members of Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, were detained at Durg Railway Station on July 26 on baseless and fake allegations.

Stating that these charges, widely denounced by religious leaders and civil society, represent a disturbing pattern of harassment against minority communities, the Association demanded the release of the two nuns immediately, initiate an independent inquiry and protection for religious workers.
