Jannik Sinner becomes first Italian man to reach US Open final, to take on 6th seed Taylor Fritz
New York: Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open and her third Grand Slam crown with a thrilling victory over a gallant American sixth seed Jessica Pegula in a rollercoaster final today.
World No. 2 Sabalenka triumphed 7-5, 7-5 to add the New York title to her back-to-back Australian Open victories.
Pegula went down fighting, however, recovering from 0-3 and break point down to lead 5-3 in the second set before Sabalenka came through.
In the Men’s Singles, 12th seed Taylor Fritz will be playing the biggest match of his career in front of his home crowd when he takes on World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final today (Sept. 8) at 11.30 pm (IST).
Sinner became the first Italian man to reach the US Open final by defeating an ailing Jack Draper of Britain 7-5, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 in the semi-finals on Friday while Taylor Fritz beat Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to become the first American man in a Grand Slam final in 15 years.
