Assembly bypolls likely on Apr. 12 or 15

The bypoll to Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly Constituencies is likely to take place on April 12 or 15 and the notification is this regard is likely to be announced by the Election Commission on Mar. 14.

The Nanjangud bypoll has been necessitated following the resignation of V. Sreenivasa Prasad, who quit the Assembly in Oct. 2016 and as well as the Congress Party later on, after he was unceremoniously dropped from the State Cabinet in June last. The Gundlupet bypoll has been necessitated following the death on Co-operation Minister H.S. Mahadevaprasad on Jan. 3, 2017. Even as the poll schedule is yet to be announced, the ruling Congress and BJP have stepped up campaigning in the two constituencies.

While Sreenivasa Prasad is the BJP candidate for Nanjangud bypoll, the Congress is yet to announce its official candidate, although it seems certain that Kalale Keshvamurthy, a JD(S) leader who recently joined the Congress, will be the Congress candidate.

The battle in Gundlupet will be between Dr. Geetha Mahadevaprasad, wife of late Minister H.S. Mahadevaprasad, who has been declared as the Congress candidate and C.S. Niranjan Kumar of the BJP. With Congress and BJP leaders taking the  bypoll as a prestigious issue, there seems likely to be a close contest between the 2 parties.
