Attack on Dalit in Gundlupet: Police asked to book suspended cops under SC/ST Act

Mysuru: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes Vice-Chairman I. Murugan on Monday asked the Chamarajanagar District Police to register a case under Section 4 of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the two Policemen who have been suspended in connection with the case of atrocity against a dalit youth in Gundlupet taluk recently.

The Chamarajanagar SP last week had suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector C. Rajendra Prasad and Head Constable Srinivas on changes of dereliction of duty and indiscipline.

Murugan met the dalit youth S. Pratap at a private hospital in city where he is undergoing treatment for depression and gathered details about the incident.

Pratap had stayed at a temple near Bandipur in Gundlupet taluk  on June 3, when he was allegedly paraded naked and assaulted at Kabbekatte.

Murugan spoke to Pratap and his father Shivaiah and collected information and the status of Police investigation.

Later, speaking to press persons, Murugan said that though the SP has suspended two Policemen, they should be booked under the SC/ST Act for neglect of duties by a public servant.

Pointing out that the District Administration has handed over a cheque of Rs.25,000 as the first part of the compensation to the youth, he said that he has directed the District Administration as well as the Police to properly monitor the case.

Chamarajanagar ADC C.L. Anand said that the youth (Pratap) was a UPSC Civil Services aspirant and would appear for the next exam as he could not make it to the previous exam. He further said that the youth’s treatment may continue for a few more days.

Chamarajanagar Additional SP Anitha B. Haddnnanavar, Mysuru DCP M. Muthuraj and other officials were present.

Hospital security

Following threat by unidentified persons to Pratap’s family members, City Police have deployed additional personnel at the hospital. On Saturday, two persons had allegedly threatened Pratap’s father.
