Avid birder’s Wildlife Message Cards

Mysuru: Dr. S. V. Narasimhan, a family physician based at Virajpet in Kodagu district, is an avid birder, nature lover, adept at computers, Karnatak music and astronomy.

Author of Feathered Jewels of Coorg, a field-guide to 310 species of birds found in Coorg, Dr. Narasimhan is the pioneer in spreading wildlife conservation messages through his unique hand-painted Wildlife Message Cards that are sent free to individuals throughout the world to mark the Wildlife Week.

Total number of hand-painted cards made by him this year is 1,970; in 33 years, 66,430 cards. Total recipients this year including Star of Mysore – 1,160; in 33 years – 11,463 persons.

The Special Wildlife Messenger of this year is Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch (Sitta castanea) — a restless, tree climbing, sparrow-sized bird with a slender bill. It has a wide foot with long toes to grasp the tree bark; moves on the tree with jerky hops and it is a splendour to see the bird descending upside down, looking for insects and seeds. It makes its nest in tree holes or crevices, lined with leaves and moss.
