Mysuru: DCP (Law and Order) M. Muthuraju has cautioned the people against posting any information related to their travel plans on social media, with New Year celebrations in the offing.
He was speaking after flagging off the awareness drive through street play about ‘Crime Prevention and Women’s Safety,’ organised by Narasimharaja (NR) Sub-Division, as part of the Crime Prevention Month at Chikkagadiyara near Devaraja Market in the city yesterday.
“The tech savvy thieves, who keep an eye on social media, get active by the moment they come across the photos related to the families on tour and break into their houses and make away with gold, cash and other valuables. We should focus on those possibilities. Most importantly, it is the educated who are falling prey to cyber crimes more when compared to unlettered persons,” said DCP Muthuraju.
With the advancements in technology, there is a change in the modus operandi being deployed by perpetrators. The criminals who keep track of the details posted by the educated people who most use the social media, act on a spur the moment they have in hand, the details like that of the personal photos and bank account of such persons.
Jewellery display
DCP Muthuraju categorically suggested the women not to be showy on social media and refrain from uploading any photos, by wearing jewellery. The women, while attending any marriages and other functions, prefer to flaunt jewellery. It is better advised to apply caution, including while going on a walk or stroll, as the miscreants will be trailing you.
Retired persons
The retired persons and senior citizens are being targeted the most under the garb of investment in stock market online, cheating several crores of rupees, with several cases registered in Cyber, Economic and Narcotics Crime (CEN) Police Station in the city.
Of late, there is a spurt in traffic violations involving minors caught riding two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The parents of such minors are being penalised, for their laxity. Hence, the parents should not allow their wards to ride vehicles, said DCP.
