Ayurveda home remedies boost immunity against Corona: Experts

Mysore/Mysuru: As India scrambles to stop the spread of Covid-19, health experts have suggested boosting the body’s immune system by taking certain immune-boosting Ayurveda supplements.

There are a number of herbal immune boosters available in the market to choose from. A mixture of herbs such as Holy Basil (Tulsi), Cinnamon (Dalchini), Black Pepper (Kari Menasu) and Raisins (Onadrakshi) can be used to prepare kashaya, a decoction that is made by boiling the powdered ingredients in water and consumed as prescribed by doctors. Unani medicine Arq-e-Ajeeb is a formulation which is said to improve digestion and purify blood.

Samshamana Vati is another trusted Ayurveda medicine, which acts as immune-modulator and improve appetite. It also plays an important role in prevention and treatment of all kind of fevers and viral infections. One can also consume Chyavanprash every day to boost immunity.

Dr. Panduranga, an Ayurveda Health Expert from AYUSH says that anyone can use these Ayurveda home remedies in the form of kashaya, but in limited quantity every day. “One can use these spices and herbs on a regular basis every day. It would improve digestion and protect the body from infection. One may add Raisins, Jaggery or Lemon juice for taste. Regular consumption of amla (Indian Gooseberry) also boosts immunity and promotes longevity.”

Dr. Venugopal, another Ayurveda doctor, has suggested to use Ashwagandha, Neem, Tulsi  etc.  on a regular basis. Ashwagandha kashaya can be prepared by adding one spoon of Ashwagandha powder to 200 ml milk with 200 ml water, boil the ingredients for sufficient time and filter the boiled liquid for consumption.

Last year, PM Modi too had highlighted the benefits of Ayurveda and urged people to “have a look” at AYUSH Ministry’s protocol to stay fit by stating that “good health is the harbinger of happiness.” The AYUSH Ministry’s protocol outlined measures to build a strong immune system and it included consuming warm water, practising yoga, pranayama and meditation for 30 minutes every day.
