Festivities from Oct.16 to 21 at Leela Channaiah Kalyana Mantapa on Valmiki Road, Paduvarahalli
Mysuru: Sri Durga Puja is a major Hindu festival celebrated primarily in West Bengal and among Bengali communities worldwide, honouring Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Bangiya Samiti Mysuru, is celebrating Durga Puja for the last 45 years as it has a special significance in Mysuru since Goddess Chamundeshwari, another form of Durga, is the presiding deity of Mysuru.
This year Durga Puja will be celebrated by Bangiya Samiti Mysuru at Leela Channaiah Kalyana Mantapa on Valmiki Road, Paduvarahalli (near Maharani’s Commerce College) from Oct.16 to 21.
Navaratri connection: The festival aligns with Navaratri, a nine-night celebration of Durga’s forms. Each day is dedicated to a different aspect of the Goddess, culminating in Vijayadashami (the tenth day), marking her victory.
Art and craftsmanship: Durga Puja is renowned for its elaborate pandals (temporary structures) and intricately crafted idols, showcasing artistic creativity. In 1980, Bangiya Samiti Mysuru was awarded the Best Tableau (1st prize) in the Dasara procession. Many Bengalis of city toiled hard to achieve this glory and honour.
Bangiya Samiti Mysuru continued to be an integral part of the Dasara procession event for a number of years till the procession was limited to the districts of Karnataka only and private participation was discontinued.
Performing arts: The fest features music, dance and drama, including traditional performances like Dhunuchi dance and cultural programmes, preserving Bengali heritage.
The festival spans five key days: Shashti (sixth day) to Dashami (tenth day). Key rituals include the invocation of Durga (Bodhan), daily worship, offering of bhog (food) and the immersive ceremony of Visarjan, where idols are submerged in water, symbolising the Goddess’ return to Her divine abode. Sindoor Khela (vermilion play) and Dhunuchi dance are iconic rituals, especially in Bengal, symbolising joy and devotion.
In 2021, UNESCO recognised Kolkata’s Durga Puja as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its global cultural significance.
In essence, Durga Puja is a vibrant celebration of faith, art and community, uniting people in devotion and festivity while reinforcing timeless values of good triumphing over evil. The citizens of Mysuru may obtain the blessings of Divine Mother.
