Bank staff on strike for second time in a week

Banking services affected for last five days, to resume tomorrow

Mysuru: Banking services across the city and district were affected today following the day-long nationwide strike call given by various Bank Officers and Staffers Unions. All the Banks remained closed without transactions.

Over 500 Bank employees, led by Mysore District Bank Employees Union Secretary Shivaprasad, staged demonstration outside Dena Bank on Chamaraja Double Road this morning. They shouted slogans demanding the Union Government to fulfil their various demands.

The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The Union claims to have membership of 10 lakh officers and staffers. A total of nine Bank Unions including All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) had given the strike call.

This was the second Bank strike in less than seven days.

Around 3.20 lakh officers from various State-run Banks were on a one-day strike on Dec.21, seeking immediate wage revision and opposing the proposed merger of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda.

The nation-wide strike had partially impacted Banking operations like deposits and withdrawal at branches, cheque clearances and issuance of Demand Drafts, among others.

In the last five days, Banks have remained closed on account of three holidays and a strike on Friday (Dec.21) and one today.
