Kavita Memorial Award presented

Mysuru: ‘Dignity is defined by the behaviour of a person and not by his orher dress,’ opined Theatre Artiste Rameshwari Verma.

She was speaking at a programme organised by Yashoda Ragow Trust at Mahajana College auditorium here yesterday to mark presentation of Kavita Memorial Award and a lecture session.

Rameshwari Verma recalled that of late there were a lot of discussions on dresses worn by teachers and lecturers to classrooms. She expressed surprise over remarks of a few people that chudidar was not a dignified dress. She further said that right from the days of Akkamahadevi, pro-women movements have been conducted.

She pointed to a wrong notion among people in society that women standing equal to men was a western culture. Hence she contended that it was difficult for women to establish their position in society. She regretted that a condition has arrived where women have to confine to four walls of a house.

On the occasion, Kavita Memorial Award was presented to poetess and woman activist Roopa Hassan.

Addressing the gathering, Roopa pointed out that despite several movements women continue to languish in society like an ox tethered to a post.

She added that if a woman takes two steps forward, she would be pulled back by four steps. She further said that the society was viewing women as just child-bearing machines but forgets to identify and respect the personality of a woman.

Writer Dr. Chandramati Sondha delivered a lecture on ‘Women organisations in Karnataka  — An overview.’  MLA Vasu presided. Trust office-bearers Dr. Ramegowda (Ragow) and Yashoda Ragow were present.
