Mysore/Mysuru: Former High Court Judge Justice H.N. Nagamohan Das regretted that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s dream of providing 50 percent reservation for women has still remained unfulfilled even after 75 years of independence.
He was speaking at Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s 131st birth anniversary celebration organised by the District Administration at Kalamandira on Hunsur road here on Apr. 14.
Condemning the successive Governments for their failure to announce 50 percent reservation for women as envisioned by Dr. Ambedkar, Justice Nagamohan Das noted that though we are propagating the principles of the Father of the Constitution, we are doing little to create awareness among public on his ideas and thoughts. Stressing on the need for educating public on the underlying principles of the Constitution, he opined that identifying Dr. Ambedkar based on caste is an insult to him. Maintaining that it was Ambedkar who lent voice to the voiceless, downtrodden and oppressed sections of the society, he said that the present reservation for women, whatever the quantity may be, is because of Dr. Ambedkar.
Calling upon political parties to pass the 50 percent women representation bill in Parliament, he contended that leaders of all political parties should lend their support to the Bill, so that it can be passed in the Parliament.
Bemoaning that the caste and class system has not been eradicated even after decades of independence, Justice Nagamohan Das said it is high time that the masses are educated on the provisions and principles of the Constitution.
