BHIO achieves major milestone with 150 successful Robotic Surgeries

Dr. M. Vijaykumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon, BHIO, addressing media persons in city recently as Dr. R. Raxith Sringeri, Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon and Gowtham Dhamerla, COO, BHIO, look on.

Mysore/Mysuru: Mysuru- based Bharath Hospital and Institute of Oncology (BHIO) has reached a significant milestone by successfully performing 150 robotic-assisted surgeries since the installation of the advanced da Vinci Surgical  System in December 2024.

This achievement marks a major leap in cancer care and minimally invasive surgery in the region and notably, BHIO was the first hospital in Mysuru to introduce the advanced da Vinci Robotic Surgical System.

According to Robotic Surgeons at BHIO, people have started to prefer robotic surgery after coming to know about its various advantages.

Robotic-assisted surgery offers high precision and minimally invasive treatment, resulting in reduced post-operative pain, lower risk of infection, minimal scarring and faster recovery.

BHIO is currently the only cancer hospital in Mysuru to adopt robotic surgical technology, bringing world-class treatment closer to patients in the region

Dr. M. Vijaykumar, Senior Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon at BHIO, highlighted the growing need for advanced surgical solutions in view of the increasing incidence of cancer.

He explained that robotic procedures involve very small incisions, leading to fewer complications and quicker recovery when compared to conventional open and laparoscopic surgeries.

Patients can resume oral intake within 24 hours after robotic surgery, whereas open surgeries often require a delay of four to five days. Faster recovery also enables the early initiation of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, improving overall treatment outcomes.

Dr. R. Raxith Sringeri, Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon, said “Mysuru has become a pioneer in revolutionary cancer treatment through robotic surgery. Our Chairman Dr. Ajaikumar’s vision is to make Mysuru a global cancer care hub. BHIO was the first to introduce Robotic Surgery and Robotic surgery offers world-class precision, scarless procedures, easier operations for obese patients, faster recovery. Robotic surgery is the future.”

Gowtham Dhamerla, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of BHIO, said the milestone reflects the hospital’s vision of becoming a centre of excellence in robotic oncology.
