Biker killed after falling into pit dug up to build bridge

Virajpet: A rider was killed after he fell into a 20 ft. deep pit dug up on Virajpet-Kerala Highway to construct a bridge.

The deceased is Vinod Kumar (29), a resident of Perumbadi near Virajpet, who was working at a private firm in Bengaluru.

He leaves behind his wife and a two-year-old son.

Vinod had come to Virajpet on Apr.6 to attend the marriage of his friend and was returning to Perumbadi via Virajpet in the night.

As the Konanur-Makutta State Highway is being developed, works pertaining to construction of a bridge was taken up on the highway and an alternate road has been made for vehicular movement. But Vinod, who did not know about it, rode straight and fell along with the bike into the 20 ft. deep pit which was dug for the construction of a bridge.

Passersby, who saw the light of the bike from inside the pit, informed the Police, who rushed to the spot only to find Vinod dead inside the pit. Based on the complaint by Vinod’s maternal uncle V.N. Sudhakar, the Police, who have registered a case, visited the spot.

Circle Inspector Kyathegowda said that due the absence of a warning board, which should have been installed by the Contractor and due to rash driving by the rider, the mishap took place.
