Boatmen rescue young lovers from suicide pact

December 2, 2021

Nanjangud: Two young lovers, who had jumped into Kapila River in a bid to end their lives, have been rescued by a few boatmen near the bathing ghat on Wednesday.

While the girl is a resident of Hebbasur village in Chamarajanagar and a minor (17 years), the boy has been identified as 19-year-old Abhi of Somwarpet, also in Chamarajanagar. The girl is pursuing her studies at a College in Chamarajanagar and the boy is employed at a petrol bunk.

As the girl’s parents came to know about the relationship, they had sent her to her grandmother’s house. Depressed over this, the two had decided to end their lives. Yesterday, they reached the bathing ghat of Srikanteshwara Temple in Nanjangud and jumped into Kapila River.

A few boatmen, who saw the two jumping into the river, managed to rescue them from drowning. As the two had swallowed water and fell ill, they have been admitted to the Taluk Hospital. A case has been registered at Nanjangud Town Police Station.
