Brisk polling in 14 LS Constituencies of Karnataka

Mysore/Mysuru: The voting for 14 Lok Sabha (LS) Constituencies in the Northern part of Karnataka  began on a brisk note in all the Constituencies this morning amidst scorching sun and sweltering heat.

The 14 Constituencies that went to the polls today in the second and final phase in the State (Third phase nationally) are- Shimoga, Davangere, Haveri-Gadag, Belagavi, Dharwad, Bagalkot, Vijayapura (SC), Ballari(ST),Koppal, Raichur (ST), Gulbarga (SC), Bidar, Hukkeri and Uttara Kannada. These 14 Constituencies of Karnataka are among the 93 LS seats spread across several States that are voting today.

Most of the Constituencies had recorded more than 30 percent polling  till noon. The voting, which began at 7 am, will end at 6pm and the fate of the candidates will be sealed in EVMs. The Election Commission had made elaborate security arrangements for ensuring a free and fair poll. 

Some of the prominent candidates in the fray are Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi (BJP-Dharwad) and Bhagwanth Khuba (BJP-Bidar), B.Y. Raghavendra (BJP-Shimoga), former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai (BJP-Haveri-Gadag), former Union Minister Ramesh Jigajinagi (BJP-Vijayapura), Priyanka Jarkiholi (Congress-Hukkeri), who is the daughter of Minister Satish Jarkiholi, Samyukta Patil (Congress-Bagalkot), daughter of Minister Shivanand Patil, Sagar Khandre (Congress-Bidar), son of Minister Ishwar Khandre, Radhakrishna Doddamani (Congress-Gulbarga), who is the Son-in-Law of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Minister B.Sriramulu (BJP-Ballari),  former Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri  (BJP-Uttara Kannada), Geetha Shivarajkumar (Congress- Shivamogga), wife of actor Shivarajkumar and Kumar Nayak (Congress-Raichur), a former IAS officer.  

The voting for 14 other Constituencies in the Southern part of the State — Bangalore South, Bangalore Central, Bangalore North, Bangalore Rural, Mysore-Kodagu, Chamarajanagar (SC), Chitradurga (SC), Kolar (SC), Hassan, Udupi-Chikkamagalur, Chikkaballapur, Dakshina Kannada, Mandya and Tumkur  was held on Apr. 26, which saw a voting percentage of just over 70  percent.

The counting of votes will be taken up on June 4 after the completion of all the 7-phases of polling across the country on June 1.
