By-polls: Campaigning hots up

Five persons file nominations in Nanjangud on the last day today; none in Gundlupet

With the by-elections for Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly Constituencies round the corner, the leaders of BJP and Congress parties are leaving no stone unturned to ensure their party candidates emerge victorious.

The party leaders, braving the heat, have been visiting villages in both the constituencies appealing the voters to support their candidates.

Former Minister V. Somanna, who is in-charge of campaigning at Nanjangud Rural, campaigned at Kalale Zilla Panchayat constituency this morning and sought support for V. Sreenivasa Prasad, who is contesting on a BJP ticket.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Kalale Keshavamurthy, accompanied by District in-Charge Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa and MP R. Dhruvanarayan visited Mallana Moole Mutt and sought the blessings of Sri Channabasava Swamiji before heading for campaigning. They also offered special pujas at Mahadeshwara temple on Hullahalli Road.

Nominations: Today being the last day for filing the nomination papers, five people filed their papers in Nanjangud and none in Gundlupet. In Nanjangud, B. Eshwar filed the nomination papers on Republican Party of India ticket while G. Anand, R. Prasanna, B.S. Mahadevaiah, Borlingaiah filed their nominations as independent candidates till we went to   the press.

Meanwhile, none of them filed nomination at Gundlupet today. Till now, only three candidates — C.S. Niranjan Kumar (BJP), Geetha Mahadevaprasad (Congress) and Shivaram (Ind) have filed their papers.

The last date for withdrawal of nomination in both the constituencies is Mar. 24 and the polling will be held on Apr. 9. The results will be announced on  Apr. 13.
