Mysore/Mysuru: The C.N. Sanjay Birth Anniversary celebrations at Dhvanyaloka on Nov.8 had some very important events to make the occasion a memorable one. A Book Launch, Release of two Dhvanyaloka Journals, The Literary Criterion and Sarasa, Lectures and “Meet the Writer Programme” were some of the notable features. It significantly coincided with the Platinum Jubilee Year of The Literary Criterion founded in 1952 by Prof. C.D. Narasimhaiah.
Dr. TRS Sharma, senior scholar, teacher, writer, critic who released a special issue of the Journal on Kashmiri Literature observed that it was the only journal in the country that had survived for so long and proved to be an inspiration for writers and scholars.
Talking about Sarasa, he lauded Prof. C.N. Srinath’s achievements in translating great poets like Hopkins, Eliot, Emily Dickinson and other writers, all of which needed more recognition.
K.S. Ram too who spoke on The Literary Criterion remarked that it was more than a journal; it was an institution in itself. It had sustained readers for more than four decades, he added.
Prof. C. Naganna, who released the Kannada translation of Raja Rao’s The Cat and Shakespeare, titled Marjala matthu Shakespeare by Prof. C.N. Srinath, also spoke on the book and thanked the author for making such a great classic available in Kannada.
Dr. Uma Ram said she was honoured to speak on Sarasa, a journal edited by Prof. Srinath, now in its 23rd year and exclusively devoted to Creative Translation. The Annual Sarasa Workshop and the Journal which complement each other was a “master-stroke” of Prof. Srinath, she remarked.
Dr. TRS Sharma’s Lecture on Semantics was highly engaging as it dwelt on the subtle nuances of Language and also on the need for a new kind of epistemology and a rigorous training in it for everyone. His references to neuro-semantics and attempts to relate it to yoga made the talk all the more thought-provoking.
The last item to come up was the launching of “Meet the Writer Programme” under which an informal interaction was made possible between the eminent scholar-cum-folklorist Dr. Krishnamurthy Hanur and the audience. Prof. Srinath, Director, Dhvanyaloka who earlier welcomed the audience, also spoke briefly on his experiences as an Editor of both the journals.
