Cabinet approves Mysuru Film City

160.8-acre project land at Immavu village, 20 kms from Mysuru, earmarked; Budget: Rs. 729.43 crore

Mysuru: The long-pending Film City project at Immavu in Nanjangud taluk has received Cabinet approval, paving the way for the development of an International Film City at an estimated cost of Rs. 729.43 crore under the Public-Private Partnership  (PPP) model. Spread across 160 acres and eight guntas, the project aims to establish a major film and entertainment hub with modern shooting studios, post-production facilities and technical infrastructure to cater to the needs of the film industry.

Tourism Department sources told Star of Mysore that the land has been acquired by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) and handed over to the Public Works Department (PWD), which has initiated work to secure the site. The project will be overseen by the Department of Information and Public Relations.

“The Detailed Project Report has been prepared and it is with the PWD, which has begun the construction of the boundary wall,” an officer said.

The project was announced in the 2025-26 Budget at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore. The 2026-27 Budget accorded administrative approval.

The Film City will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model. While the Government will retain ownership, a private entity will be responsible for designing, financing, building, operating and maintaining the facilities.

Studios, theme park and hotels

The project will be developed in phases, with indoor and outdoor shooting facilities, virtual production studios and advanced post-production infrastructure. Planned sets include replicas of a railway station, airport, railway tracks, an aircraft runway and a palace, besides a golf course, ponds and lakes.

The proposed facilities also include a multiplex, cafeterias and eateries, parking areas, an administrative building, a business hub, co-working spaces and creator studios. Commercial and retail outlets, along with accommodation for film crews, technicians and other industry personnel, will form part of the complex.

Range of hotels

The accommodation component will include five-star, three-star and budget hotels. Other permissible facilities include a film school and training institute, museum, convention centre, amphitheatre and fitness centre.

According to the project estimates, hotels will account for Rs. 174.32 crore, other expenditure Rs. 135.82 crore, the theme park Rs. 87.09 crore and the business hub Rs. 75.24 crore.

As per the proposed tender conditions, Kannada films and films in other regional languages of Karnataka, including Tulu, Kodava, Konkani, Banjara and Byari, could be eligible for a 10 percent subsidy on film components covering indoor and outdoor studios and post-production facilities.

Public-Private Partnership model

The Film City will spread across approximately 160 acres at an estimated cost of Rs. 700 crore. The Cabinet approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) on Thursday and the official documentation has been issued. The project will be taken up under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with interested private parties required to invest their own capital to construct and maintain the facility in accordance with the prescribed project parameters.
