Cabinet clears Rs. 183.66 crore for Mysore Airport expansion

Land transfer still awaited: Airport Director

Bengaluru / Mysuru: The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the release of Rs. 183.66 crore for various works to upgrade the Mysore Airport at Mandakalli to international standards. The works include extension of the runway and creation of additional infrastructure.

The decision comes at a time when the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is awaiting the transfer of land required for the expansion and development of the Airport, including runway extension to accommodate larger aircraft.

The Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), the nodal agency, is expected to hand over the land to the AAI once the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) clears all pending compensation for structures and trees, if any, and ensures that the land is free from encumbrances.

Speaking to Star of Mysore this morning, Airport Director P.V. Usha Kumari said the Cabinet decision was wonderful news.

“Though the official order is awaited, the Rs. 183.66 crore is meant for the overall upgradation and development of the Mysore Airport. Just today, I was coordinating with KSIIDC and KIADB, and as of now, the land has not yet been handed over to the Airports Authority. Some portion of the funds will also go towards finalising compensation related to  land acquisition.

“We are still awaiting the land transfer, but this approval brings hope. It is indeed good news for Mysuru, as the Airport’s development will promote both tourism and industry,” she said.

The existing runway is suitable only for smaller aircraft. With tourists arriving from different parts of the country and abroad, expansion and modernisation of the Airport has become essential. The project will be taken up once the State Government hands over the required land.

The land acquisition process is in its final stage, with clearance pending for around seven acres. Once the process is completed, the land will be transferred from the KIADB to the KSIIDC and subsequently handed over to the AAI, sources said.
