Camera trap captures tigress, three cubs

Gadgets installed near Akala village in Nanjangud; family back in the woods, claim Forest officials

Mysuru: A camera trap installed by the Forest Department during a combing operation has captured a tigress and her three cubs moving through Akala village in Nanjangud taluk on Nov. 2.

The development comes five days after a tiger attacked Paramesh, following which villagers lodged a complaint with the Forest Department.

Forest officials, who visited the spot to ascertain whether the attack was by a tiger or a leopard, found pugmarks confirming the presence of a tiger. They also found pugmarks of cubs a short distance from the attack site.

Following this, Forest officials and staff installed camera traps in the area and placed a cage to trap the animal.

The following day, a camera trap installed in a nearby agricultural field captured images of a tigress and her three cubs moving through the area. The Forest Department then decided to launch a combing operation.

During the operation, officials checked the camera traps installed in the forest and found that the tigress and her cubs had moved towards the Chikkamma Chikkadevi Betta forest region in Saragur taluk. Footage from cameras installed in that forest region subsequently showed the tigress entering the forest.

DCF (Mysuru Circle) K. Paramesh said, the tigress and her three cubs had moved deep into the forest and there was no need for villagers to panic.

Meanwhile, villagers have urged the Forest Department to take measures to prevent wild animals from entering human habitations.
