Carcass of tigress found in Kollegal; Leopardess electrocuted in Gundlupet

Mysore/Mysuru: Adding to the list of wild animals dying in and around forest areas, a carcass of a tigress was found at Lokkanahalli Forest area of Kollegal Wildlife Division of Chamarajanagar district and a leopardess electrocuted near Nenekatte village in Gundlupet taluk.

In the first case, the decomposed carcass of a tigress was found at Lokkanahalli Forest area in Kollegal Wildlife Division of Chamarajanagar district.

Lokkanahalli Forest area in Kollegal Wildlife Division, comes under Biligiri Ranganatha Tiger (BRT) Reserve. The Forest staff, who were on their regular patrolling, found the carcass and on closer examination, they came to know that it was of a tigress which may have died about two days ago.

BRT DCF Deepa J. Contractor, ACF Nandagopal, Wildlife Warden Kruthika Alanahalli, Kollegal RFO Vasu, Veterinarians Dr. Waseem Mirza and Dr. Shivaraj, NGO representative Malleshappa and staff examined the carcass and came to know that the tigeress was about 8 to 9 years old and may have died a natural death.

Bandipur Veterinarian Dr. Waseem Mirza and Kollegal Veterinarian Dr. Shivaraj conducted post-mortem and the tigress was cremated as per the procedure.

In the second case, a leopardess was electrocuted after it came in contact with a live power cable near Nenekatte village in Gundlupet taluk.

The leopardess, aged between 2 and 3 years, climbed a tree to rest when it accidentally came in contact with the live power cable passing close to the tree and  was electrocuted.

Villagers, who saw the dead leopard on the roadside close to the tree, brought it to the notice of the Forest Department. Bandipur Tiger Reserve Director S. Prabhakaran, ACF G. Ravindra, Gundlupet Buffer Zone RFO Mallesh, Veterinarian Dr. Waseem Mirza, Wildlife Warden Nanjundaraje Urs, DRFO G.P. Bharat, patrol staff Parasappa and others inspected the dead leopardess.

During their inspection of the spot, the Forest officials found traces of the leopardess getting electrocuted and falling from the tree. Post-mortem was conducted at the spot and the leopardess was cremated in the forest area.
