Mysuru: The Cauvery water sharing agreements signed in 1892 and 1924 have meted injustice on the State and it has not been possible to find a solution for the problem over the past few decades, said Chief Minister Siddharamaiah, here yesterday.
He was speaking after releasing the book ‘Naanu Kannambadi Katte, Heegondu Atmakathe’ authored by Prof. P.V. Nanjaraje Urs, at the Rani Bahadur Auditorium located at Manasagangothri.
Water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is not new. It is a history and since the agreement between the then Madras Province and Mysore State was not done scientifically the matter today is in front of the tribunal.
The CM also said that it was not possible to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu as State suffered severe drought for past two years and added that Court Judgments were like a hanging sword as they were opposite to the reality. “We will pass a resolution in the Assembly stating that it is not possible for the State to release water to Tamil Nadu,” said Siddharamaiah.
The book written by Prof. Nanjaraja Urs gives an insight into the construction of the KRS dam built between 1911 and 1932, problems faced, people responsible for the construction and it also talks about the current scenario with respect to River Cauvery water dispute, he added. CM Siddharamaiah also remembered the contributions of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar for launching many pro-people programmes. “He said that it was during Nalwadi’s rule that K.R. Hospital, Kannada Sahitya Parishat, University of Mysore and FKCC. Above all, it was during his rule that Miller’s Commission was constituted in year 1919 to address problems for the Backward Communities.
He also said that the Government was not conducting any puja praying for the rains adding that it was only people who had belief were offering the pujas. It may be recalled that Water Resources Minister M.B. Patil has been offering various pujas praying for good rainfall.
