Cauvery Hospital gives new lease of life to 60-year-old patient

July 9, 2023

Mysore/Mysuru: A 60-year-old male patient got a new lease of life due to efforts of a team of doctors from Cauvery Heart and Multispeciality Hospital in Mysuru. A resident of Hunsur, the patient visited the hospital with complaints of pain in the right lower abdomen and distension of the abdomen. He was thoroughly evaluated and necessary investigations were done.

He also underwent a CECT scan of the abdomen and pelvis. The scan revealed a large retroperitoneal tumour measuring 30x28x35 cm. The right kidney was completely displaced upwards and the right ureter was traversing through the tumour, with hydro-ureteronephrosis. The patient underwent a major surgery — exploratory laparotomy and resection of the mass and an en-bloc right nephro-urterectomy.

The surgery was done successfully by the team comprising of Dr. Kiran Shankar, Consultant Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Aravind, Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Sreeharsha, Consultant Anaesthesiologist and a team of senior OT staff.

The tumour weighed 15 kgs. The whole surgery took more than 5 hours to complete as it was a very complex one involving the separation of the tumour from major blood vessels in the abdomen. The patient was monitored in the Multidisciplinary ICU for a day after surgery and was discharged from the hospital after 5 days of treatment, Dr. Kiran Shankar told the media at Pathrakarthara Bhavan in city.

Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are very rare tumours which affect just 2.5 individuals per 10 lakh population and till now less than 20 cases are reported worldwide of huge liposarcomas of more than 30cm in size.

Dr. G.R. Chandrashekar, Chairman, Cauvery Heart and Multispeciality Hospital, has lauded the efforts of the team.

The patient is in follow up treatment and will be managed by the Doctors of Oncology Department of the Hospital.
