Central Library clarifies

Sir,

This refers to the letter titled “Newspaper sections in Central Libraries of Mysuru closed frequently?” (Star of Mysore dated Nov. 18).

This is to clarify that Mysuru Public Libraries are committed to staying open on all working days and we are making special efforts to keep the paper section open even during weekly offs.

Regarding filling up of vacant posts in Library Department, we have to go as per norms of the Government. Now only 12 Library Assistants are working for 33 total branch libraries — each Library Assistant is allotted 2 to 3 branch libraries apart from their own allotted library. Our dedicated staff are managing multiple branches, ensuring services on Sundays and 2nd Saturdays, despite weekly offs on Mondays.

Financial constraints are impacting library services, with 6% Library Cess given by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) — approximately Rs. 20 crore — pending. The release of these funds is crucial for sustaining and enhancing library services.

Regarding bringing belongings to libraries, there is no issue with it all. However, we have advised users not to keep costly items in their bags to prevent theft. Unfortunately, there have been instances of theft, leading to Police complaints.

We value our patrons and their feedback and assure the community that we are actively addressing these concerns to improve our library services.
