New Delhi: As a measure to overcome shortage of specialist doctors, the Union Government has mooted addition of 5,000 more Graduate (MBBS) and Post-Graduate medical seats (MS, MD etc.) across the country from the academic year 2028-29.
Informing this in the Lok Sabha, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda said that at present, there are 86,360 Post-Graduate Medical seats in Colleges across the country and it has been planned to add 5,000 more seats in the next two years.
Pointing out that Karnataka has the highest number of PG Medical seats (10,092), Nadda said that out of this 2,805 are Government seats and the rest 7,287 are Management seats. Karnataka is followed by Maharashtra (9,216 seats) and Tamil Nadu (8,023) in respect of the number of PG seats, he said.
Apart from PG seats, the Centre has also proposed to add 5,023 MBBS seats in phases. Currently, there are 823 Medical Colleges in the country, with a total of 1,36,939 seats.
Out of this, 63,296 are Government quota seats and the rest Management quota seats, Karnataka has the highest number of Medical Colleges offering MBBS course in the country, followed by Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.
