Chikkagadiyara stops ticking

Not repaired since about 6 months

Mysore/Mysuru: The clock at the historic Dufferin Clock Tower (Chikkagadiyara) near Devaraja Market has stopped ticking since about six months and the public have expressed their anger on the officials concerned for not getting the clock repaired.

They said that the clock had stopped showing time since five to six months and despite bringing it to the notice of the officials concerned at Mysuru City Corporation (MCC), nothing has been done so far and it seems that the officials have forgotten that it is a heritage structure with historical significance.

Lord Dufferin was the Viceroy of India and the clock tower was commissioned in his honour during his friendly visit on invitation from Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar in 1886, hence it was named as Dufferin Clock Tower.

This clock used to provide time for street vendors, traders, newspaper distributors and the public since many years, who have a special attachment towards the clock.

Public said that though they wear wrist watch and have smartphones, it has become a habit for them to look at the clock to know the time. They also said that the officials, who were busy with the election, would get the clock repaired after the election gets over but they (officials concerned) have turned blind eye towards it.

They have urged the authorities concerned to get the clock repaired at the earliest.
