Mysuru: Fearing her parents backlash on losing her mobile phone, a 16-year-old girl committing suicide in Gandhinagar is definitely a wakeup call for the parents, said city Psychiatrist Dr. B.N. Ravish.

The children being addicted to cyber these days is a dangerous trend and the parents and the society has to think about this, said Dr. Ravish, speaking to Star of Mysore, on Thursday night.

In this suicide incident there are two prominent issues, one is the girl’s personality and two, the environment she is living in and the parents’ behaviour.

Normally, the children’s  wrong decisions these days is attributed to parents’ neglect and the child’s independent mindedness along with influence of the friends and the outside world where they would like to show off, he said.

“Even the parents are buying expensive gadgets for their children’s birthdays or for their success in exams. These days children are also not happy with ordinary mobile phones. They want to buy the best brands. In such a situation, the middle and lower income families, just to please their wards and in spite of not being able to afford, buy them expensive gadgets by taking loans. This pushes the children into world of fantasy,” he said.

“In case of the girl who committed suicide, guilt conscience must have probably gripped the girl who lost her cell phone. Also she might have been scared of her parents’ reaction and these two factors must have driven her to end her life,” he added.

Dr. Ravish said that the relationships now-a-days are very fragile and only when the bond between the children and the parents are strong can such incidences be prevented.

Solution: The only solution to prevent such incidences is to improve the family circumstances and relations. The parents should bring about an awareness from a young age about the importance of family ties and looking after the house. They should be told not lose hope due to the ups and downs in life and face life’s tough questions with courage.

As much as giving importance to studies, the children should also be taught life lessons, said Dr. Ravish.

Every 40 second there is a suicide!

There is a growing sense of insecurity among the present generation of youth and they do not have patience for anything as they want everything to happen in a jiffy.  This attitude is resulting in more number of suicides. Now-a-days not only in India but all over the world the number of suicide cases among youth below 25 is increasing. Every 40 seconds, one person is committing suicide. And if the present social and family tensions continue, then by 2020, there is danger of one person committing suicide every 20 seconds.
