Children’s Science Congress ends tomorrow:Young Minds concerned about Earth

Mysuru: The students of Gopalaswamy High School, Mysuru, are well aware about the problems that could be at stake due to the depletion of the mother earth. They have thus created models to create awareness about sustainable development with the use of science and technology, in the ongoing State-level 25th National Children’s Science Congress – 2017  being held at the Vignana Bhavan of KSOU, Mysuru.

They have created a couple of models. The first model caters to the Modern techniques used in Agriculture. This model has been prepared by Jeevan Arya, S. Samarth Koundinya and S.Aniruddha Narasimha Nadig of X standard. In this model, they have used three different concepts — Hydroponics, Rooftop Gardening and Food Security Systems by UV sounds.

Plants are grown on pebbles instead of land or soil on pipelines with the help of NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium) fertilizers. In metropolitan cities where less land is available, nutrients such as NPK must be used to create an ideal environment for optimal Plant Growth.

Aniruddha said, “This can be used by the astronauts for growing vegetables during their stay in space. This concept is good for growing tomatoes, berries and leafy vegetables. And to add, the growth rate compared to that on soil is faster by 30% to 50%.”

They also have setup a rooftop gardening model where rain water harvesting is carried out which used for irrigation. In the UV security system concept, they have a model of a field which when subjected to any form of pressure on the land or intervention by animals, releases a UV sound that irritates the cattle and forces it to get off the field.

In their Second Display of Model, they have a Hybrid Railway Station where solar energy is used to power the running of the train as well as provides electricity to the Station created by M.S. Ravindra, Md. R. A. Abrar and S. Thrishal. Abrar said, “By just using solar energy for the running of one train 1350 tons of carbon dioxide emission can be reduced.”
