Mysuru: Stating that Mahatma Gandhi always propagated truth, non-violence and harmony among all religions and communities, District Minister Dr.YathindraSiddaramaiah said the society can live with peace and harmony only if Gandhiji’s principles are followed.
He was speaking at the Gandhi Jayanti celebration organised jointly by the District Administration, MCC and Information and Public Relations Department at Town Hall in city this morning.
“Religions are like rivers which join one ocean. There should be no discrimination or disparity between communities in the name of religion”, he pointed out.
N.R. MLA TanveerSait said Gandhiji is very much relevant even today at a time when the entire world is coping with wars and violence. The present generation should study his life and principles and try to adopt them in their life, he added.
On the occasion, the winners of essay contest (held for High School, Degree and PG) conducted by the Information and Public Relations Department, were given away prizes and safety kits were distributed to MCC Pourakarmikas.
The event also featured an all religion prayer meeting, in which various religious heads took part.
Earlier, the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose Jayanti too falls today, were offered floral tributes and Mahatma’s statue at Gandhi Square was garlanded.
MLAs K. Harishgowda and T.S. Srivatsa, DC G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, ZP CEO S. Ukesh Kumar, City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, SP MallikarjunBaladandi, MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha, Information and Public Relations Department Deputy Director Vinod Chandra, Assistant Director S.H. Nirmala and others were present.
The Jayantis were also celebrated across various parts of the city by several institutions.
CESC celebrated by offering floral tributes to the portraits of Gandhiji and Shastri at its Corporate Office in Vijayanagar.

Speaking on the occasion, DRM Mudit Mittal highlighted the life and principles of the two great leaders. The event also featured distribution of prizes to Railway staff, SafaiMitras and students of Lalitha School for their participation in the 15-day ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Campaign’ from Sept.17 to Oct.2.
The City and District Unit of BJP too offered floral tributes to Gandhiji and Shastri at the party office in Chamarajapuram. City BJP President L. Nagendra, leaders Mahesh, Jayaprakash (JP) and others were present.
